Admission criteria

Students applying for admission must hold a master's degree in the fields of History, Art History, Archaeology or Humanities, with the possibility of admission to master's degrees or equivalent degrees in related subjects, having completed the number of credits required by current regulations, at the discretion of the Academic Committee of the Programme.

Applicants must submit a Doctoral Thesis Project, endorsed with their signature by a supervisor (access to the document). The supervisor must be a PhD with accredited research experience. To justify this requirement must also be provided, if applicable, the document of supervision with recognized six-year research periods (access to the document) or without recognized six-year research periods (access to the document). The Doctoral Thesis Project will necessarily contain the following sections: interest of the subject, state of the question, objectives, methodology, sources and a work plan.

When the number of applications for admission that meet the established requirements is greater than the number of places offered, the Inter-University Academic Committee will resolve the applications by applying the following criteria:

a) Average mark of the applicant's academic record, which will have a total weight of 80% of the final mark.

b) Once the above criteria have been applied, in the event of a tie, the Academic Committee will assess other relevant merits provided by the applicant in his/her CV and related to the doctoral programme, as follows:

    • professional experience: up to 20 points
    • courses and seminars, attendance at conferences, training courses, publications, stays at other universities (Erasmus Programmes), etc., up to 30 points.
    • knowledge of languages of scientific interest, up to 10 points.
    • personal interview, which will have a total weight of 20% of the final mark.

Exceptionally, the Inter-University Academic Committee may admit a greater number of applicants than initially foreseen in the doctoral programme, due to the special quality of the applicants' CVs or for strategic reasons for the university, always depending on the availability of the necessary capacity to supervise the corresponding doctoral theses.
